Choosing paver thickness & grade

The most common mistake in paver procurement is buying on price and appearance while ignoring the two numbers that decide whether a pavement lasts twenty years or two: thickness and strength grade. Both are defined by IS 15658, the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for precast concrete paving blocks, and both are decided by one question — what traffic will run over this surface?

Grade (M30, M40, M50) refers to the characteristic compressive strength of the concrete in N/mm². A higher grade resists crushing under wheel loads; greater thickness distributes those loads into the bedding and sub-base. They work together — a thick block of weak concrete fails just as surely as a thin block of strong concrete.

What else IS 15658 checks

Beyond strength, the standard limits water absorption (a proxy for density and durability), controls dimensional tolerances (so interlock actually interlocks), and specifies abrasion resistance for surfaces that will be swept, scraped and trafficked for decades. When comparing suppliers, ask for test certificates covering all of these — not just a compressive strength number.

Quick rule: if anything with four wheels will use the surface regularly, never go below 80 mm / M40. The saving on 60 mm blocks is erased by the first re-laying job.

Why premium pavers keep their colour

Walk through any Indian city and you'll see the same story: paving that was terracotta-red when laid, now a washed-out grey within three summers. Colour fading isn't inevitable — it's the visible result of specific manufacturing shortcuts. Understanding three factors lets you tell lasting colour from cosmetic colour before you buy.

1. Face mix versus through-colour dilution

Premium pavers are made in two layers: a structural base concrete, and a dedicated face mix — a fine, pigment-rich, dense wearing layer forming the top few millimetres. Because the pigment is concentrated where it's seen, the surface carries deep, uniform colour and a tight, low-porosity finish. Budget blocks mix a small quantity of pigment through the entire body instead; the colour starts diluted and sits in an open-textured surface that weathers quickly.

2. Pigment quality

Synthetic iron-oxide pigments are UV-stable minerals — they do not bleach in sunlight. Cheaper organic dyes and low-grade oxides do. The difference is invisible on day one and unmistakable by year three. Reputable manufacturers specify pigment type and dosage; it's a fair question to ask any supplier.

3. Curing and efflorescence

That white, chalky bloom on new paving is efflorescence — dissolved salts migrating to the surface as the block dries. Controlled curing at stable temperature and humidity dramatically reduces it, while yard-cured blocks dried in open sun show heavy bloom and micro-cracking that dulls colour. (Light efflorescence on any concrete product is natural and washes off within months — heavy, persistent bloom signals poor curing.)

Buyer's checklist: ask whether the paver has a dedicated face mix, what pigment type is used, and how the blocks are cured. Three questions separate a twenty-year surface from a two-year one.

Permeable & grass pavers: paving that breathes

Conventional paving seals the ground. Every monsoon, that sealed surface converts rainfall into runoff — flooding streets, overloading drains and sending water away from the very aquifers our cities draw on. Permeable paving reverses this: it lets rain pass through the pavement into the ground beneath, and it's rapidly moving from a niche choice to a specified requirement.

How it works

Permeable interlocking pavers use widened, aggregate-filled joints or drainage channels cast into the block, laid over an open-graded stone reservoir that stores and infiltrates water. Grass pavers take it further — a concrete grid with open cells that grow turf, giving a green surface that still carries vehicle loads for parking areas, fire lanes and driveways.

Why projects specify them

The benefits compound: groundwater recharge where borewells are stressed, reduced peak runoff and localized flooding, lower surface temperatures than sealed hardscape, and compliance advantages — rainwater management is increasingly mandated in building bye-laws, and permeable surfaces contribute toward green-building credits under rating systems like IGBC and GRIHA. For plot owners, grass pavers can also count differently toward ground-coverage calculations than sealed paving (verify with your local authority).

Where to use which

Permeable interlocking pavers suit parking lots, residential streets, walkways and plazas — anywhere with regular traffic. Grass pavers suit occasional-traffic surfaces: overflow parking, driveways, fire-tender paths and landscape edges. Both need a properly designed sub-base; the pavement is a system, not just the visible block.

Design note: permeable paving performance depends on the joint fill and sub-base as much as the block itself. Involve the supplier at design stage, not after the BOQ is frozen.
