Choosing paver thickness & grade
The most common mistake in paver procurement is buying on price and appearance while ignoring the two numbers that decide whether a pavement lasts twenty years or two: thickness and strength grade. Both are defined by IS 15658, the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for precast concrete paving blocks, and both are decided by one question — what traffic will run over this surface?
Match the specification to the traffic

Grade (M30, M40, M50) refers to the characteristic compressive strength of the concrete in N/mm². A higher grade resists crushing under wheel loads; greater thickness distributes those loads into the bedding and sub-base. They work together — a thick block of weak concrete fails just as surely as a thin block of strong concrete.
What else IS 15658 checks
Beyond strength, the standard limits water absorption (a proxy for density and durability), controls dimensional tolerances (so interlock actually interlocks), and specifies abrasion resistance for surfaces that will be swept, scraped and trafficked for decades. When comparing suppliers, ask for test certificates covering all of these — not just a compressive strength number.
